Influences in Monet's Life
Edouard Manet
1832 – 1883
8 years older than Monet and Manet had
made a controversial impact upon Paris Art while Monet
was an unknown student artist.
Manet never
exhibited with the Impressionist although they all
meet regularly in the Paris cafes and was a father
figure much respected by other impressionist artist.
It was Monet who organized a subscription to
save Manet’s Olympia for Frances Musée D'Orsay
Camille Pissarro 1830 –1903
The oldest of the founder
impressionists group, a wise man able to give advice
and encouragement to others.
Monet and
Pissarro both went to London to avoid the
Franco-Prussian War 1870-71. While there Pissarro
introduced Monet to Paul Durand-Ruel who was to
becoming an important world art dealer and a friend of
Monet for life.
Pierre-August Renoir
1841 –1919
Monet meets Renoir in 1863 and remains
a life long friend often going out to paint together
in Paris and along the River Seine.
Founder
member of the Impressionist group who later became
rich and famous as a painter of portraits and nudes
Alfred Sisley 1839
–1899
Meets Monet while they along with Bazille and Renoir
where at Gleyre’s studio in Paris.
Sisley the
least known of the important impressionist until after
his death when Monet organized a sale of his painting
to assist his widow.
Frederic Bazille 1841
– 1870
Monet was Bazille’s best friend and
supporter throughout his short life, they often posed
for each other and he is the tall figure in Monet’s
Le dejeuner sur l’herbe.
Bazille’s
promising career tragically end in the Franco-Prussian
War
Eugene Boudin
Born at Hornfleur 1824, painted the landscapes of his
native Normandy coast. He meets and encourages the
young Claude Monet to paint in the open air. The
Impressionists admired his paintings and he was
invited to hang in the first exhibition 1874.
Camille
Doncieux 18?? – 1879
Meets Monet in her teens as a model and poses for
Women in the Garden, Women in the Green Dress. In
1867 gave birth to first son Jean in 1870 Monet and
Camille get Married. She dies soon after the birth of
their second son Michael
Alice
Hoschede/Monet 18?? – 1911
Alice and art buyer Ernest had six children but were
drifting apart, when the family were in poor time they
lived together with Monet who formed an relationship
with Alice, after Ernest died they got married in1892
and lived at Vetheuil with their eight children and
later moved to the now famous Giverny.
Edward Degas 1834 –1917
The metropolitan of the Impressionist, paints brothels
and ballet and landscape pictures. Not Monet’s friend
but well respected and Monet collects some of Degas
pastels later in his life.
Berthe Morisot 1841 – 1895
The leading female impressionist painter, exhibiting
with the group often. Berthe and Edouard Manet were
very close after he took her under his wings.
Paul Cézanne 1839 – 1906
First meet Monet in 1860s as unknown artist in a Paris
Studio. Cézanne returned to Provence so was unable to
maintain a close relationship but they had an high
regard for each other’s work, Monet acquired examples
of Cézannes paintings and was invited and attended the
famous gatherings at Giverny |
